Our neighbors

Not only are we graced with great human neighbors at the ranch, but we have some wonderful furry neighbors as well. Of course, we get the occasional visit from the ranch cattle and Sherman, the sheep, but we also have some wild friends, too. The first picture is of a porcupine...a real, live, porcupine in the wild, not smooshed on the roadside! I couldn't zoom in close enough to get a good picture with my flashless iPhone, so just focus in on the black blur high up in the grape vines. We were going swimming one day when Bella was fixated on looking up a tree. We followed her eyes to find Spike high up in the grape vines. He was huge & so cute! After Stephen told us they can shoot their quills (I love my trivia guy), we cautiously watched Spike while we swam. We never saw him come down, but have a feeling he has a little den by the water.

The next picture is one we took just two days ago. Rex found these, Rio Grande Wild Turkey eggs! They were hidden in the grass in front of our pop-up. I hope the mama will not be alarmed by the dog scent and come back to incubate them. After doing a little bit of research, they lay 10-12 eggs, 1 each day. Then she will incubate them for 28 days! Maybe we will just get to see them hatch before we leave for our trip.

I do feel like we are invading on some sacred wild animal territory, but hopefully we can be good neighbors so they will stick around (if only our two domesticated furry friends would catch on to this!)
