The Mouse & The Hopes

During the winter, we realized that we had opened a mouse hostel in our shed. The ground had settled underneath the shed, leaving a sizable gap or what we call the "mouse entrance hall." We are finally getting around to cleaning it out & remodeling the hostel, mainly removing all portals into the mansion.

Well...when Stephen went out to the shed this afternoon, he had the pleasure of meeting one of our residents, "cute fuzzy field mouse #1." Our little friend took cover under the overturned wheelbarrow, giving us ample time to make a plan. We all agreed that extermination was our best option, and after deciding whether to spear or knock out our little nemesis, Stephen took a couple of fully animated practice swings with the shovel...he was ready! I took my position and counted down, "three, two, one, lift!" I strategically lifted the wheelbarrow, so that the little vermin would only have one direction to go...towards the giant with the shovel! Not being able to see over the wheelbarrow, I anxiously looked into Stephen's murderous eyes to see...eyes of adoration???? "He's soooo cute!" my husband says, which was right according to the little squirt's plan..."look at my murderer with my big brown eyes, blink several times, then RUN!" Stephen finally came out of his trance while the mouse ran up the closest tree. He whacked the tree a few times & the mouse escaped to an unreachable branch. Excuse me a moment while I wipe away my tears again from laughing so hard...

So, then what? Stephen tries to redeem his mouse catching heroism by climbing the tree & shaking the little devil from limb to limb until the fuzzy rodent drops into our neighbors yard & does his best Houdini act.
