For 3 years, I have patiently waited for Samuel to begin reading. It all started when he turned 5, and I felt like I need to teach him to read. After many reading lessons, they ended in frustration & tears. Soon afterwards, our family fell into the "life learning" home schooling philosophy. For 2 years, we have basically let our children learn different skills from simply living day to day.
I am an avid reader, so I have anticipated the day when my children will enjoy reading as much as I do. I have been very patient, and we have allowed Samuel the freedom to learn in his own way and in his own time. I have been hearing for 3 years..."My son didn't read until 10 & 6 months later he was reading college level books" or "My child was reading silently to himself for years before he read aloud," etc. So....I have waited with the secret desire for him to start reading sooner then later.
We rarely ask him to read something, but if the topic of reading comes up, Samuel will say, "I can't read." Fine...he will one day. Well, this is what he read out loud to his cub scout den yesterday:
"She went for a walk to the place where most of the snow had melted so that she could eat berries. She left her children behind where they were still asleep. After she hand finished eating, she went back to her den and took a nap. While she was sleeping, her children woke up and saw that their mother's mouth was purple from eating berries."
I think Samuel can now read!!!
