Tuesday, we visited with a couple in Dripping Springs who are building a straw bale house. It was awesome! Charles and Laurel were very nice and talked with us for a good hour about the construction. Needless to say, we are now looking for some land to buy :-) We then preceded to Daniel and April's house. The kids had fun running wild and came home covered in dirt (which is always a sign of fun times). We met Grammy & Grandpa at our house, watched American Idol, and then Steve & I went out! My Mom & Dad were gracious enough to watch the kids since they were spending the night in order to catch an early flight to Virginia. We went to see V for Vendetta. We really enjoyed it. 
After our weekly gymnastics class & play day with friends, we preceded out to my Mom & Dad's to take care of their other 2 dogs (Lucy, of course, is staying with us). We had wonderful nighttime spring thunderstorms, and the next day we took a tour of Longhorn Caverns. The kids really had fun, and our guide (a retired LAFD battalion chief) was very accommodating to them. The only other tourees were another family with a 2 and 4 year old from Buda! After we left the caverns, a guy asked if we wanted to see a snake. "Of course!" So, while admiring a beautiful, harmless corn snake, Stephen spotted a very well camouflaged WESTERN DIAMONDBACK RATTLESNAKE not 2 feet away from us!! He was a very young rattler (only about 3 rattles), and Samuel was so excited to see his "first real live rattlesnake". Meanwhile, I am up on the picnic table demanding the kids to follow my lead. Our tour guide encouraged the snake to move along and so did we.

Hay bales, thunderstorms, caves and snakes!! Good times in Central Texas! But, we missed ya and can't wait to chase dragons and make dream pillows:)
ReplyDeleteOK, i saw u posted this at 6:54 am, are u REALLY awake then??? I so can't stand u! I JUST heard a story on NPR about straw bale houses. So cool u got to see 1. I was thinking that it would make an awesome cabin. If TX weren't so far and away, we'd go in on that land and split the cabin 50-50. What are they covering it over with? Curious.
ReplyDeleteI see u all are fans of caverns too. We take special "trip outs" to hit caverns in our travels. Most fave was Secret Caverns in the Adirondacks. It had POURED and they let us down to walk thru calf-high water to see the humongous waterfall at the end which usually wasn't so big. Kids were impressed and enchanted by the adventure of wading thru deep water.

Oh Owen caught a frog at the pool on clean-up day and named him, take a guess, Froggy. It was a leopard frog we think (?). We let him go Sunday night amidst fewer tears than expected. What fun!
