First off...
After exploring the game cabinet, Maya, our 7 year old daughter, found the game Risk. She REALLY wanted to play this fascinating game and Stephen was all for it! The only problem is that Risk is best with 3 or more players, so they both have been asking me for weeks to play. Well...after my one experience playing Risk about 10 years ago with Steve and Jason where the game lasted so long that we had to break overnight and I stayed up for hours thinking about how I could take over the world only to be annihilated in the morning, I dare say that I haven't wanted to play the game again.
But, today I was bored and antsy and not wanting to do housework, so th
ey talked me into a game of Risk. I also had some "gaming confidence" after FINALLY beating Stephen in Ticket to Ride Sunday. So, the game begins....
To begin with, thinking that our 7 year old daughter is not threat at a strategy game for "10 year olds +," Stephen and I begin battling each other. It soon becomes clear that Maya is starting to dominate the game. Ever since she was a little girl, she has had extreme luck when playing games (Thanks, Dad, for passing these genes on to her) and her luck was shining through during her first game of Risk. She would also randomly but strategically place her armies while Stephen and I sat befuddled and humbled.
3.5 hours later, Maya has dominated the board...taken over North America, Europe and Asia!!! She would make cute little remarks like, "Queen Maya is here to destroy you!" and "This time I am going to kick your butt!" and "World Domination, ha ha ha!!!" While we knew that eventually her desire to fight every available country would not last the test of time, it was the first game that she has played so intensely and enjoyed so immensely.
After 4 hours of game time, Maya fought her last battle of Ural vs. Siberia. I was amazed at how long she remained focused and attentive to the game of Risk! Thank goodness for the bouncy ball that she could sit and bounce on to release any nervous energy that might interfere with her world domination. The question is...Did this game of Risk fulfill her need to find out what the cool game with all of the little colored pieces was or is this just the beginning of weekly battles to see who is really the supreme warlord of the world???
(Imagine taunting sing-songy voice) "You got beat by a seven-year old, nyah na na na NA na! I have never played Risk, but I would either rock and be a fanatic or totally stink at strategy, no in between.
